Housewife murdered in Kuakata, husband arrested
Police have recovered the body of Arifa Akhtar (17), a housewife who ran away from home and got married to her cousin in Gournadi, Barisal.
Around 12 midnight on Monday, the body of the housewife was recovered in a bloody state from the rented house of Md. Milon Hawlader in the Hilsha Park area of Kuakata Municipality under Mohipur police station in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district.
The husband and cousin of the deceased, Rifat Hawlader (21), who was arrested during police interrogation, confessed to killing his wife Arifa. A murder case was filed with Mohipur police station on Tuesday morning in this regard.
Police and locals said that a year ago, A. Khalek Hawlader’s daughter Arifa Akhter (17) and Rifat Hawlader, son of his deceased uncle Anwar Hossain (Barek) Hawlader, developed a love affair.
Cousin Rifat Hawlader and his cousin Arifa Akhter ran away from home due to love, got married 4 months ago and started living in the rented house of Md. Milon Hawlader in the Ilish Park area of Kuakata Municipality. Rifat had been working as a waiter at the Marine Restaurant in Kuakata to earn a living.
Locals said that they often quarreled and argued during their married life. On the day of the incident, at around 11:45 pm, people in the neighborhood heard crying coming from the house and rushed to the spot and saw Arifa’s body lying on the floor in a bloody state. At that time, her husband Rifat was sitting next to her and crying.
Mahipur Police Station OC Md. Mohabbat Khan said that after receiving the information, the police reached the spot and recovered Arifa’s body that night. Arifa’s body was sent to the Patuakhali Hospital morgue on Tuesday morning for an autopsy. Police recovered various evidence, including the sharp object used in the murder, from the scene.
A. Khalek Hawladar of South Baourgati village in Gournadi upazila filed a murder case with Mahipur police station on Tuesday morning, naming 5 people including her husband and 2/1 other unidentified people as the plaintiff.
OC Mohabbat Khan said that during police interrogation, the deceased’s husband Rifat confessed to killing his wife and told the police that his wife Arifa had been talking to another man (young man) on her mobile phone every day. There was a marital dispute between the husband and wife over this.
Husband Rifat has confessed to killing his wife Arifa by slashing her throat with a sharp object on Monday night over a marital dispute.
Rifat is scheduled to give a statement at the Patuakhali Judicial Magistrate Court, admitting responsibility for killing his wife under Section 164.
