Guest birds are being sold openly in Fakirhat
Guest birds that are banned from being caught are being sold openly in various markets of Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat. A class of hunters has become active in hunting birds of prey at the beginning of winter.
It has been learned from talking to local people that like every time, guest birds have started coming in search of food and shelter at the beginning of winter. They are taking shelter in various canals, beels, and water bodies in the area.
The birds have started taking shelter in various water bodies including Baruidanga Beel, Bogura Beel, Kodlar Beel, Huchla, Dahor Moubhog, Mulghar, Faltita, Kakdanga, Kalkalia, Kendua Beel in the upazila.
And taking advantage of this opportunity, a class of unscrupulous hunters are hunting birds with traps and nets.
These birds are being sold openly and secretly in bags at local markets by hunters. Each pair of birds is being sold for 300 to 1,000 taka depending on the size.
A class of unscrupulous people are getting involved in bird hunting and buying and selling in the hope of huge profits. Several groups in this network sell birds through acquaintances.
Birds are delivered to specific locations by placing an order over the phone through acquaintances. People from various professions, including the elite class of the area, buy and eat these birds.
In various markets including Fakirhat Bazar, Faltita Bazar, Mansa Bazar, Town Nawapara Hat, Kalkalia in the upazila, the sale and purchase of guest birds, which are banned from being caught and sold, is being done.
Among these birds, night heron, golden eagle, dunkar, kheni, snipe or mud hawk, khurule, waterfowl, wild duck, buck, crane, and kunchushi are sold. It is also known that local pigeons and doves are also sold.
It is known that bird hunters adopt new strategies and change their locations to avoid the surveillance of the administration. Local nature lovers demanded that the local administration monitor the matter and take strict action.
In this regard, Sharif Khan, a resident of Fakirhat and a renowned bird expert, said that every year during the winter season, migratory birds from various countries adjacent to the Himalayas, including Siberia, China, Mongolia, and India, come to this country and take shelter.
Hunting and keeping any bird and wild animal is a punishable offense under the Wildlife Conservation Act. It is necessary to create awareness in this regard by conducting propaganda.
