Upazila administration pays tribute on Genocide Day in Kaliganj

The Upazila administration paid tribute on the Genocide Day of Kaliganj, Gazipur. 01 December 1971, the Pakistani occupying forces lined up 103 unarmed Bengalis inside the National Jute Mill in Khalapara village under Bahadursadi union of the upazila and killed them in brushfire. In memory of the martyrs of the genocide, tributes are paid by laying wreaths at the ‘Martyrs in Memory of 1971’ memorial on December 1 every year. On Monday (December 1) morning, Upazila Nirbahi Officer ATM Kamrul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Zakia Sarwar Lima, Upazila Agriculture Officer Farzana Taslim, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Abul Kalam Azad, Upazila Livestock Extension Officer Dr. Md. Sihab Mia, Upazila Engineer Md. Rezaul Haque, Upazila Social Service Officer Afroza Begum, Upazila Youth Development Officer Md. Ismail Hossain Bhuiyan, Upazila Family Planning Officer Nahida Khatun, Upazila Cooperative Officer Md. Asaduzzaman, Upazila Information Service Officer Soha Tamanna, Police Administration, freedom fighter Mohammad Hossain Pathan, Md. Anwarul Haque Bachchu, Md. Fazlul Haque Kazi, Md. Monirul Haque, Md. Nurul Islam, Md. Anwar Hossain, Md. Shamsul Haque, Md. Siraj Uddin, leaders of various political and social organizations laid wreaths at the ‘Martyrs’ Memorial 1971’ and prayed for the forgiveness of the martyrs’ souls. Local residents said that December 1, 1971, was a painful day in the history of the Bengali nation, which was on the verge of independence.Monday morning, the mill officials, employees and workers were preparing for breakfast. Just then, the Pakistani occupying forces crossed the river from the nearby Ghorashal camp and entered the mill premises.From morning till sunset, under the pretext of conducting a raid in search of freedom fighters, they rounded up the unarmed Bengalis working there, gathered them and lined them up and started a brush fire.One by one, bodies fell lifeless. Silence descended on the National Jute Mill. After the massacre, the Pakistani occupying forces broke through the wall on the south side of the mill and fled. The bodies of the martyrs were lying in the betel nut garden of the mill. Out of fear and panic, no one dared to approach. As a result, the bodies became food for jackals and vultures. After independence, the locals entered the mill premises and recovered the mutilated bodies of 103 martyrs. Then they dug a grave on the south side of the mill and buried the martyrs together. In memory of the martyrs, the mill authorities built a memorial monument, ‘In Memory of the Martyrs 1971’. A concrete mosque was later built next to the mass grave.
