Covered van filled with 90 bags of Indian goods seized in Barhatta, Netrakona
Locals have seized a large quantity of Indian sarees and three-pieces smuggled across the border in Barhatta upazila of the district and handed them over to the police. On Thursday (November 6), around 9:30 am, the locals seized the covered van in Kankurabazar of the upazila. At that time, the driver of the covered van, Ibrahim (25), and his assistant (helper) Sabbir (27), were arrested. Their home is in the Maona Chowrasta area of Gazipur. According to the police and locals, the driver of the covered van, loaded with Indian sarees and three-pieces, left for Gazipur from the Madhyanagar border area of Sunamganj. On the way, the covered van hit a tree in the Kankur area of Barhatta upazila. Locals blocked it and wanted to know what was inside. Unable to give an immediate answer, the people opened the covered van and found smuggled goods inside. On receiving the information, the police seized the covered van and brought it to the police station. At that time, the driver and assistant of the covered van were also arrested. When the covered van was taken to the police station and opened, the police found a large number of Indian sarees and three-piece suits. The arrested driver Ibrahim said, “We left from the border area in the morning with the goods. We have associates everywhere. They showed us the way. On the way to see the associates, the covered van hit a tree in the Kankada area of Barhatta. This is why the locals became suspicious and arrested it. I had not slept for four-five days. As a result, I fell asleep while the car was moving on the road. That is why the car lost control and hit the tree. Barhatta Upazila cultural activist Azizul Haque Faruk said that several times before, the locals have seized vehicles filled with smuggled goods and handed them over to the police. Repeatedly, the people of the area seized the smuggled goods. Why don’t the law enforcement agencies get this information?
Barhatta Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Kamrul Hasan said, the smuggled goods in the covered van are being counted.
The driver and assistant have been arrested in this incident. Legal action is under process in this regard.
