The Bangladesh Coast Guard has rescued 26 Rohingyas, including women and children, while being trafficked to Malaysia in Baharchhara, Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
They were rescued in a special operation at the Baharchhara outpost on Tuesday (October 28) night.
The Coast Guard’s media officer, Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq, gave this information in a press release on Wednesday (October 29) afternoon.
The Coast Guard said that based on confidential information, it was learned that some Rohingyas, including women and children, were being kept waiting in a sampan boat in the sea area adjacent to Abdul Ali’s Ghat in Jummapara area of Baharchhara, Teknaf to be trafficked to Malaysia.
On receiving the information, members of the Baharchhara outpost conducted a drive in the area. During the operation, 26 Rohingyas kept for the purpose of trafficking were rescued.
However, the members of the smuggling gang fled after sensing the presence of the Coast Guard, so no one could be arrested.
The rescued Rohingyas said that several organized smuggling gangs planned to send them to Malaysia by sea by promising them a better life, high-paying jobs and cheap trips abroad.
The Coast Guard said that intelligence surveillance and operations are continuing to arrest the smugglers.
Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq said, “Such operations by the Bangladesh Coast Guard to prevent human trafficking will continue in the future.”
