Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has conducted a drive at the Chittagong City Corporation to investigate the fraud of 40 crores in the municipal tax records of two organizations.

It is alleged that dishonest officials of the corporation changed the municipal tax by wiping it out.

On Thursday (October 23) afternoon, the ACC team conducted the drive at the Tiger Pass City Corporation office.

Assistant Director of the ACC, Sayed Alam, confirmed the matter. He said that in the annual assessment of the municipal tax assessment for the 2017-2018 fiscal year, instead of 26 crores 38 lakhs, Tk 20 crores was shown less than the holding of Eshak Brothers at the time of presenting it to the Appeal Review Board.
Besides, the Municipal Tax Appeal Review Board showed 5 crore 67 lakh taka of Tk 25 crore 67 lakh in the Incontend Depot. In both the institutions, two of Tk 26 and 25 crore were deleted. This reduces the amount by Tk 20 crore to Tk 40 crore.

He also said that the initial investigation showed that the documents were erased.

It is initially believed that the owner of the institution is also involved. Since they are beneficiaries. The opinion of signature experts will be taken. The banking accounts will be investigated in the detailed investigation.

CCC Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin told The Daily Morning Glory that two TO and one DTO were directly responsible. Account assistants also knew about the matter. Accused have been suspended. One has retired; post-retirement benefits have been suspended. Further action will be taken after a show cause notice within 10 days.
He further said that initiatives have been taken to recover Tk 26 and Tk 25 crore from the two institutions by cancelling the previous decision of the review board. If any other government agency takes any action, the CCC will cooperate.
