Dr. K. Zaman BNSB Eye Hospital organized a variety of social events to mark World Sight Day 2025. This celebration was part of a global effort to raise awareness about avoidable blindness and vision impairment.
This year’s theme, “Love Your Eyes – People at the Centre of Eye Health,” inspired the day’s activities. The events successfully brought together students, community leaders, and the general public to promote eye health for everyone.
A major highlight of the celebration was a vibrant 5-kilometer mini-marathon titled ‘Run for Healthy Vision’ organized to engage the youth. Starting from the picturesque Zainul Abedin Park and looping through the city’s main roads, the run saw spontaneous participation from approximately 1,500 students aged 14 to 18, including children with physical disabilities from 69 local educational institutions. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of eye care from a young age and concluded with an awards ceremony for the winners.
“Volunteer assistance was provided by approximately 250 participants from the BNCC, Red Crescent, and Rover Scouts of the Government. Ananda Mohan College, Govt. Muminunnesa College and Syed Nazrul Islam College. They were supported by Cub Scouts from schools like Mymensingh Zilla School, Govt. Laboratory High School, and Mukul Niketan School.”
In addition to the marathon, the hospital organized free eye examination camps for the general public, providing essential services. A mass rally and a ‘Concert Love Your Eyes’ were also held to celebrate successes and address the challenges of preventing avoidable blindness.
Professor Dr. Md. Jakir Hossain, the esteemed General Secretary of Dr. K. Zaman BNSB Eye Hospital, stated, “World Sight Day is a crucial reminder for us that people must be at the center of eye health.” He added, “Through events like the ‘Run for Healthy Vision’ and our free eye examination camps, we are not just providing services; we are building a society that is aware, active, and proactive about their vision. Our goal is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to see the world clearly.”
The event was graced by the presence of Independence Award (Shadhinata Padak) recipients Mrs. Firoza Khatun and Dr. Md. Khalek Talukdar as guests of honor, who highly praised the hospital’s philanthropic work.
