1 arrested in connection with the burning of Buddha statue in Boalkhali
The army has arrested a young man named Md. Rahim (27) in connection with the incident of setting fire to the Bodhi tree and Buddha statue in the “Jayishthapura Mahabodhi Temple” in Boalkhali, Chittagong.
The incident took place in the morning of Tuesday (October 7) in the upazila’s Jayishthapura Central Vaishali Bihar.
The arrested Md. Rahim is the son of Rabiul Haque of Sandipara in Kharandip area of the upazila.
Major Md. Russell, commander of the Boalkhali army camp, said that Md. Rahim is mentally unstable.
At one stage of interrogation, Md. Rahim confessed to his crime and setting fire to the temple.
However, he did not admit any reasonable reason for his misdeeds.
He further said that the accused was handed over to Boalkhali Police Station for proper investigation and further legal process.
