Even after two months have passed since the horrific robbery and double murder incident in Laxmi Mandap Purbapara village of Jianagar union in Dupchanchia upazila of Bogura on the night of July 8, there have been allegations that the progress of the case is not satisfactory. Saudi expatriate Shahajan’s wife Riva Akhter (30) and his father, retired madrasa teacher Aftab Uddin (70) were killed in the incident. After the murder, the robbers looted about 6 lakh 20 thousand taka and gold ornaments worth more than 1 million taka. However, the police have not yet been able to recover the looted money and gold ornaments. Also, the five accused in the case are still at large. There has been widespread anger and disappointment among the locals regarding the police investigation in this regard. Late at night, a group of robbers entered Aftab Uddin’s house and first killed him by hitting him on the head and strangling him. Later, his daughter-in-law Riva Akhter was also killed in the same way. However, their seven-year-old daughter Rukaiya Tasnim Maliha miraculously survived. After the murder, the robbers looted money and gold ornaments and fled. So far, six accused have been arrested in the case filed in this incident, including the robber Sardar Abdul Hakim (34), the mastermind Abdul Mannan (50), Rafiqul Islam (41), Mithun (36), Ziyarul (33) and Abdur Rahim Bulu. However, at least five members of this gang of robbers are still absconding. In particular, the two masked robbers are still beyond the reach of the police. The arrested accused have confessed in the court under Section 164 that a total of 11 people directly participated in the robbery. Aftab Uddin’s wife, Tahmina Bibi, said, “Although six people have been arrested after this tragic murder, five influential accused are still absconding. The looted money and gold ornaments have not been recovered. We are living in fear and if the trial process is prolonged, the accused can easily abscond.” Inspector Rakib of the District Detective Branch (DB), the investigating officer of the case, said, “The statements of the accused are being examined seriously. Several raids are being conducted to catch the absconding accused and efforts are being made to locate them using technology.” Bogura District Superintendent of Police Zedan Al Musa PPM said, “This case is a high priority for us. Efforts are being made to arrest all the accused as soon as possible and file a chargesheet in the court. There is no negligence on the part of the police, rather, raids are being conducted simultaneously in different districts.”According to analysts, several important steps are needed to expedite the progress of the case. Such as mobile tracking, CCTV footage analysis, and activating local informant networks. In addition, it is necessary to effectively interrogate the arrested to collect new information, increase surveillance to prevent the smuggling of looted money and jewelry, and increase police patrols to ensure the safety of the plaintiff. Thus, this double murder case is a warning not only to one family, but to the entire society. Until the absconding accused are caught and the looted money and jewelry are recovered, the trial of this case will not progress effectively. Without the concerted efforts of the law enforcement agencies and the prosecution, the chances of ensuring justice are slim.
