Cumilla University (CoU) hosted a commemorative discussion titled “The Role of Students and Citizens in the July Uprising and Democratic Progress” marking the anniversary of the July-August mass uprising.

The event took place on Sunday, August 3, at 10:00 AM in the university’s virtual classroom, attended by students from various faculties.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Haydar Ali was the chief guest, while Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Masuda Kamal and Treasurer Prof. Dr. Md. Solaiman were present as special guests. Also present were guest speakers Dr. Moinul Islam, Professor of Population Sciences at the University of Dhaka, and Dr. Giti Ara Nasreen, Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism.

Dr. Moinul Islam discussed the socio-political context of the uprising and its impact on public consciousness. Dr. Giti Ara Nasreen emphasized post-uprising responsibilities and the enduring relevance of student-citizen movements.

Chairing the event, Assistant Professor Mutasim Billah criticized the absence of an education commission despite commissions in nearly every other sector. He highlighted the urgent need for curriculum reform to reflect national identity, values, and people’s aspirations.

Pro-VC Prof. Masuda Kamal noted that the July uprising symbolized national unity against autocracy, involving people from all walks of life. However, she warned that remnants of autocratic systems still persist and urged the youth to lead in building a truly democratic society rooted in knowledge and values.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Haydar Ali concluded by calling the uprising a rare moment of national solidarity against oppression. He emphasized that although a dictator was overthrown, his legacy still affects many aspects of society. He encouraged the youth to remain vigilant and lead with patriotism and democratic ideals.
