There have been allegations that primary schools in Kegati (Kaliara Gabragati) union of Sadar upazila of the district were closed on Thursday (July 31). On-site investigation revealed that teachers at the government primary school in Kegati Union closed the school on Thursday morning after they were invited to a wedding. Later, the teachers sent the students home. When I went to Hatkundali Government Primary School around 2 pm, I saw that the school gate was locked and even the classrooms were locked. When asked about this, the locals said that the school was locked because the teachers had gone to attend a wedding. Locals also said that not only Hatkundali Government Primary School was closed on the occasion of the wedding, but all the government primary schools in the union were closed by the teachers early in the morning. When asked about this, Tahura Akhter, the headmistress of Hatkundali Government Primary School, said, “One of our teacher’s daughters is getting married, so we came to eat at the wedding.” Not only us, but also teachers from other primary schools in Kegati Union had come, so he handed his phone to someone else. Then, a person on the other end introduced himself as Taitul Islam Khan and said that he was a teacher at Gabragati Government Primary School. He had also closed the school and gone to attend the wedding. He later said that they closed the schools with the permission of the education office. But education officials say that teachers of government primary schools cannot go to weddings after closing the school, and even the Netrakona Education Office has not given them any such permission. In response to this question, the teacher of Gabragati Government Primary School said, “Will the education officials take responsibility like this?” In this regard, Netrokona District Primary Education Officer Mohammad Shahidul Azam said that there is no rule for teachers to go to weddings after closing schools. We will look into the matter and take appropriate action.
