A young woman named Surma Akter (24) is on a hunger strike at a young man’s house in Tarakanda Rajibpur village of Kandiura Union in Kendua Upazila, demanding marriage. She is the daughter of Salimulla Mia, a resident of Bichipara village in Laxmiganj union of Sadar upazila. On-site investigation revealed that Sharif Mia (28), son of Abdul Jalil of Rajibpur village, has been living in Malaysia for the past 5 years. He recently returned to the country. Surma Akhter, who is on a hunger strike, said that she had a relationship with Sharif Mia before she went abroad. Then, Sharif recently returned to the country and promised to marry Surma. But under pressure from his family, Sharif suddenly turned off the phone. On the other hand, Sharif’s relatives threatened to release Surma’s objectionable video on social media. They even threatened to kill her if she demanded marriage. In this situation, Surma has been on a hunger strike at Sharif Mia’s house since Thursday morning (July 17) demanding marriage. Kendua Upazila Executive Officer Imdadul Haque Talukder said that instructions have been given to the officer-in-charge of Kendua Police Station and the administrator of Kandiura Union Parishad to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
