Abul Farid (28) of Sinha Bangla Union in Sadar Upazila of the district is living an inhuman life with his feet chained. Abul Farid, son of Bhutto Mia of Gobindapur Hariakhali village of the union, has been mentally unstable for the past 2-3 years. With the help of his poor parents, he sold his assets and underwent several treatments at a private mental health center in Netrakona district town, with great difficulty. Currently, the family is unable to treat Abul Farid due to financial weakness. Meanwhile, due to the lack of proper treatment, he has to be chained up. Whenever he somehow manages to escape, he attacks the residents of the neighborhood. Abul Farid even beat up and injured 20 to 25 people, including children Jisan (10) father of Md. Sohel Mia, Abdul Khalek (45) father of Abdur Samad, Md. Ratan Mia (60) father of the deceased Shamsu Talukder, and Md. Mitu Akhter (22) father of Ali Ahmed, using whatever he could find in front of him, including sticks, axes. In this situation, Abul Farid’s family and neighbors, including the villagers, have sought urgent intervention from the appropriate authorities to see if he can be brought back to normal life through government-sponsored treatment. When asked about this, Netrokona Sadar Upazila Social Service Officer Md. Abdur Rahman said, “We will take appropriate steps to arrange for his treatment.”
