Dulal Mia, Sunamganj
The Sunamganj District Committee of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) has been formed. Advocate Taiyabur Rahman Babul, former president of Sunamganj District Bar Association and General Secretary of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (Sunamganj Unit), has been elected as President, and Lecturer Dulal Mia has been elected as General Secretary. On the occasion of the committee formation, a discussion meeting was held on Friday evening, July 11, at the Shaheed Muktijoddha Jagatjyoti Public Library Hall in the town. The meeting was presided over by Advocate Taiyabur Rahman Babul and moderated by Lecturer Dulal Mia. The chief guest and keynote speaker at the event was Professor Dr. Nur Mohammad Talukder, President of BAPA Central Committee. Alomgir Kabir, General Secretary of BAPA Central Committee, was present as the special guest. The welcome speech was delivered by Sajaour Rahman. Other speakers included: Freedom fighter Advocate Asad Ullah Sarkar, women leader and environmental activist Koli Talukder Aroti, Lecturer Habibullah Askir Talukder, Headmaster Shamsul Alam Russell, and retired Sergeant Ziaur Rahman, among others. Following extensive discussions, the 41-member BAPA Sunamganj District Committee was officially announced by the central president and general secretary based on consensus.

In their speeches, the speakers stated:
“Today, on this special occasion, we have gathered for an important initiative — the formation of the Sunamganj District Committee of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA). This is not just an organizational activity; rather, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in environmental protection and public awareness. Sunamganj is a region deeply reliant on its haor-based ecosystem. The wetlands, rivers, haors, hills, and canals are integral parts of our lives. However, these natural resources are under constant threat — illegal sand and stone extraction, riverbank erosion, chemical pollution, indiscriminate deforestation, and the impacts of climate change all pose existential risks. In such a situation, BAPA plays a crucial role as a neutral, democratic, and science-based organization in protecting the environment of the country. Our responsibility is to make this movement stronger and more effective in the context of Sunamganj’s realities. We firmly believe that the newly formed district committee will act responsibly, energetically, and efficiently. They will not only identify problems but will also seek and implement solutions. They will work in coordination with local people, the administration, and the media to make a meaningful impact.”
