To realize the dream of the July Revolution, we must return to democracy

Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury during an exchange of views at the Chittagong Press Club

BNP Vice Chairman Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury said that in order to realize the dream of the martyrs in the July Revolution, we must return to the democratic path through elections. He also said that the election roadmap should be prepared based on the possibility of national elections between December and June, which Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has mentioned.
He said these things while exchanging views with journalists at the VIP lounge of the Chittagong Press Club on Sunday, April 13. The meeting was chaired by Press Club Interim Committee Member Secretary Zahidul Karim Kochi and was attended by CMUJ President Mohammad Shahnawaz, General Secretary Saleh Noman, Press Club Interim Committee Members Mustafa Naeem, Golam Maula Murad, Permanent Members Moinuddin Kaderi Shawkat, Rafiqul Islam Selim, Sohag Kumar Biswas and others.
Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury said that elections should be held after the necessary reforms. And the basis of this reform can be the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution. Because no one has any disagreement with the basic principles established by martyr President Ziaur Rahman in the Constitution.
He said that many things of the declaration of great independence were not included in the Constitution of ’72. And through the Fourth Amendment, the grave of freedom of speech of the people was written, including the killing of democracy. But after the change of the situation in 1975 and the revolution of the Sepoy Janata Party, no one disagrees with the principles that Shaheed Zia established through the Fifth Amendment, including multi-party democracy, freedom of speech and press, and complete trust in Allah. Therefore, reforms can be taken forward based on those principles.
Praising the interim government, especially the chief advisor, Professor Yunus, he said that the BNP will continue the good work this government is doing when it comes to power. This continuity of the government will continue to attract foreign investment. The current government is doing a good job by bringing talented people back to the country by clearing the name of talent trafficking and giving them important state responsibilities. BNP will remember this.
Regarding Professor Yunus’ meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that Professor Yunus said the right thing for Bangladesh. He also commented that the respect given to the chief advisor in China has increased the status of Bangladesh. Stating that the people of the country want to return to democracy, Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury said, the possible time that Professor Yunus has said for the election is the roadmap. And there is no need to look at what anyone has said. Some urgent reforms must be completed and elections held. This is the expectation of the people.
Stating that BNP will work to fulfill the dreams of those who gave their lives and suffered paralysis against Hasina’s fascist rule, he said, their sacrifice will not be allowed to go in vain. The awakening that has been created among the people against the hegemonic forces will remain unbroken. The turnout of millions of people in the March for Gaza program in Dhaka on Saturday proves this. We have political differences. But it has been proven once again that we can come together on the issue of the country, on the issue of integrity. This is a final message for the hegemonic forces.
