A round-the-clock operation against the storage of goods in floating warehouses at sea,
There are allegations that lighter ships are being used as ‘floating warehouses’ to create an artificial crisis in the market after unloading imported goods.
Coast Guard, the Department of Shipping and the Chittagong Port Authority have launched a joint round-the-clock operation against the illegal storage of imported goods in floating warehouses between ships in the river and the sea without marketing them after unloading.
The operation is being conducted from 11:30 am on Wednesday (March 19) in the Karnaphuli River and the outer anchorage area of the port. Omar Faruk, Secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority, confirmed the truth of this.
Port sources said that some unscrupulous traders are allegedly using lighter ships as ‘floating warehouses’ to store imported goods in order to create an artificial crisis in the market. However, it is prohibited to store goods on ships for more than 72 hours after unloading them. Therefore, the third round of operations against illegal storage of goods on ships is being conducted from Wednesday morning.
Coast Guard and the Department of Shipping, led by the magistrate, are jointly conducting this operation. The Chittagong Port Authority has provided all-round cooperation in this.
CPA said that details will be announced after the operation is completed.
