A police officer on duty was beaten up by a gang of people who planned to form a ‘MOB’, for stopping him from smoking marijuana. The officer’s mobile phone, wallet and wireless set were snatched away. The incident took place at around 11 pm on Friday (February 28) near the Charpara Ghat at Patenga Beach in Chittagong city.

It is learnt that some local youths regularly smoke marijuana at Patenga Beach. Around 10 pm, SI Yusuf Ali of Patenga Police Station, who was on mobile duty, noticed some youths smoking. He went ahead and questioned the youths. At one stage, the youths admitted their mistake and apologized and were released after being warned. Eyewitnesses said that shortly after the group of drug-addicted youths left the scene after admitting their mistake, they returned to Patenga Beach with several others. At that time, SI Yusuf was moving towards the patrol car he was with. However, before that, the youths came and asked him, “Are you a fake policeman? Where is your ID card?” Without waiting for an answer, the youths immediately jumped on SI Yusuf. He was beaten up indiscriminately. In a video obtained by an eyewitness, SI Yusuf can be seen crying. In a tearful voice, he was saying, “They took my mobile, wallet, wireless, everything.” At one point in the video, some unknown youths were seen putting the snatched mobile into Yusuf’s pocket.
When the duty officer of Patenga Police Station was asked about this, he said that two people involved in the incident have been arrested.

“While performing checkpost duty on the Outer Ring Road adjacent to Patenga Sea Beach, SI (Retd)/Yusuf Ali along with a contingent of forces at Patenga Model Police Station received a call from the National Emergency Service-999 on 28 February at 7pm and after taking a U-turn with a vehicle, SI Md. Yusuf stopped at the scene – Outer Link Road adjacent to Sea Beach under Patenga Model Police Station, 200 yards in front of the SAPL depot. At this time, the accused Simon (27), &
Ali Tafsir Imad (22), A motorcycle also police custody for the incident.

They created panic and threatened SI Yusuf Ali by calling him a fake policeman and snatched his mobile phone, wallet and walkie-talkie. When SI Yusuf Ali shouted for help by identifying himself, the accused beat him up and called him a fake policeman and gathered the miscreants known to the accused at the spot. Meanwhile, officers and forces patrolling the Sea Beach area and the people around came forward. The agitated crowd caught the accused and created a ruckus, while the accomplices of the accused fled. Other mobile party officers of the police station and the people around rescued SI Yusuf Ali. The accused arrested by the crowd were taken into police custody and during the search, the mobile phone, wallet and walkie-talkie snatched from SI Yusuf were recovered and a knife and a motorcycle used in the robbery were seized from the accused.

In the said incident, the crime of disrupting law and order A case was registered under the Speedy Trial Act at Patenga Model Police Station.”
