BNP panel wins Cox’s Bazar District Bar election President Syed Alam, General Secretary Tohidul Anwar

Advocate Syed Alam, a candidate of the BNP-backed Nationalist Lawyers Forum nominated panel, has been elected president and Advocate Mohammad Towhidul Anwar general secretary in the Cox’s Bazar District Lawyers Association elections. Cox’s Bazar District Bar Association elections were held on Saturday (February 22). Out of the 17 posts in the election, Nationalist Lawyers Forum nominated Advocate Syed Alam-Advocate Mohammad Towhidul Anwar won a total of 9 posts including the President and General Secretary. Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Lawyers Council nominated Advocate A.K.M. Shahjalal Chowdhury-Muhammad Nurul Islam won 6 posts. Two independent candidates without Awami League-backed panels won. A total of 38 candidates are contesting for 17 positions on the association’s executive committee this time. For a long time, lawyers supported by BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami had united for 17 positions and jointly fielded regular panels in the Cox’s Bazar District Bar Association elections. Breaking with this long-standing tradition, lawyers supported by BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are holding elections for 17 positions in two separate panels this time. On the other hand, the Awami League and the political parties blessed by the previous Hasina government did not present a unified panel. Separately, three lawyers supported by the Awami League have run as independent candidates for various positions. In addition, Advocate Golam Farooq Khan Kaiser has been elected as an independent candidate for the post of General Secretary from the AB Party.
