Five people, including Mehedi Hasan Saif, the mastermind and head of the juvenile gang group involved in the public beating of Mehebul-Ifti couple in Uttara, have been arrested. Police have also recovered the two ramrods used in the incident. The rest of the arrested are Mubarak, Ravi Roy, Alfaz and Sajib. Police said that two ramdas were recovered from the Turag River near the West Abdullahpur area adjacent to the Dhaka-Ashulia highway near Sector 9 of Uttara on Wednesday morning. The two Ramdas were recovered from the Turag River behind the 5-storey building of Oli Munshi in Abdullahpur Khanbari along with the arrested Saif and Sajib. Local sources said that the arrested Saif and Sajib are their two brothers. Even though they rented out their house in Abdullahpur Khan, their movements were reckless.
A local resident, who did not want to be named, said that they have been violent since childhood. Saif is a Jubo League activist. He used to go to Jubo League meetings and processions. He is a follower of Jubo League leaders Sohel and Moniruzzaman of Uttara Sector 9. Apart from this, he also has a juvenile gang group. According to police sources, Saif was the mastermind and leader of the juvenile gang group that robbed the Mehboob-Ifti couple on Road No. 9 of Uttara Sector No. 7 last Monday night. At that time, the other person with Saif in his arms was named Alfaz alias Shishir. In this regard, Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Hafizur Rahman told Jugantor that during interrogation of the accused, it came out that they had thrown the sharp weapons into the river. Based on this information, we conducted a raid at the location and rescued Ramda. The motorcycle they used during the incident has also been seized. The OC also said that the remaining issues of this case will be completed very soon. Regarding the arrest of Saif and Sajib, who led the lynching of the Mehboob-Epti couple, OC Hafizur Rahman said, “With the help of information technology, we arrested the accused from different areas of Tongi-Konabari in Gazipur.” It is worth mentioning that on Monday night in Uttara Sector 7, Mehboob Hasan and Nasrin Akter Epti, residents of Uttara, were beaten up by members of a youth gang group for protesting against the loud riding of bikes and the beating of rickshaw pullers. The victim couple filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Uttara West Police Station that night. In the meantime, the court has remanded the arrested Mubarak and Robi Roy.
