As part of central program, a huge protest rally was held at the local Shaheed Dr. Abul Kashem Maidan on the initiative of Joypurhat district Jamaat yesterday (18/2/25). Later, a huge protest march circled the main roads of the city. The speakers at the rally said that Jamaat leader Azharul Islam has been imprisoned for more than 13 years. “He has been repeatedly remanded and subjected to physical and mental torture. He has fallen seriously ill several times because of this. But he has not been given minimum medical treatment.” They say that after the fall of Sheikh Hasina and the establishment of the interim government, the people of Bangladesh were hoping that Azharul Islam would be released in a dictatorship-free Bangladesh. “But six months and nine days after the interim government took power, ATM Azharul Islam has still not been released. The political program of the fascist Sheikh Hasina government has been criticized, questioned and rejected throughout the world.
Keeping ATM Azharul Islam, who was arrested during the autocratic government, in jail is nothing but extreme oppression and humiliation against him. The nation is shocked that he is still in jail in a fascist-free Bangladesh. On January 23, the Appellate Division adjourned the hearing of the reconsideration application until February 20.
