Former army chief KM Shafiullah is no more

Retired Major General KM Shafiullah, one of the sector commanders of the Liberation War, has passed away. He was 90 years old at the time of his death.
He died while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka around 8 am on Sunday (January 26).

It is learned that Safiullah, who was in his nineties, had been ill for a long time.
He was suffering from various health problems including diabetes, hypertension, thyroid complications, fatty liver, and dementia.
The first funeral prayer of General Shafiullah will be held at the Rupganj Abdul Hamid High School grounds in Narayanganj after Zuhr, and the second one will be held at the Army Central Mosque after Asr. KM Shafiullah was born on September 2, 1934, in Rupganj, Narayanganj.
In 1971, Safiullah was the second chief of the 2nd East Bengal Regiment in Joydevpur.
At the beginning of the Liberation War, Shafiullah was the commander of Sector No. 3. Later, when the three regular army brigade forces were formed, known as S Force, Shafiullah came to lead it. He was awarded the title of Bir Uttam for his special contribution to the Liberation War. After the country gained independence, he served as the army chief from 1972 to 1975.
Later, he served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to various countries including Malaysia, Canada, Sweden, and England.
Shafiullah served as the army chief until August 24, 1975.
He served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to various countries for 16 years from 1976 to 1991. He joined the Awami League in 1995 and was elected to parliament in 1996 on the Awami League’s nomination.
