# Why can’t the police arrest Saiful 

Four people have been arrested on charges of kidnapping three people in Chittagong; they are followers of former Chhatra Dal leader Saiful Islam alias Burma Saiful.

DB police rescued the kidnapped people from the garden behind the Labor Welfare Center at the Polytechnic Institute intersection of Panchlaish Police Station in the city on Saturday night and arrested four people.

The four arrested are – Bashir Ahmed alias Rana (27), Md. Jihad (24), Md. Arif (24) and Md. Emon alias Saddam (23).

Among them, there are 10 cases against Bashir, 08 against Emon and several cases including theft, robbery and robbery against others.

The three rescued are Sameer Das (45), Keshab Mitra Das (43) and Rubel Rudra (42). Among them, Keshab Mitra is a priest and the other two are traders in shalkar. Three all are Sonatoni Religious.

Deputy Commissioner (Crime) & Media Officer Raish Uddin said at a press conference at the city police commissioner’s office on Sunday that at different times on Saturday, the accused abducted the three rescued people from Hillview area, locked them in a building under construction on Hillview Road No. 1, beat them up and demanded a ransom of 9 Tk lakh. Later, they tied their hands and feet behind the labor welfare center.

On receiving the information, a special team of the detective police conducted a drive at night and rescued them and arrested four people. He said that some others escaped during this time.

Several swords, knives, homemade weapons and five motorcycles were recovered from the arrested people.

The kidnappers introduced themselves to each other, DC (Crime) Raish Uddin told TMG, Rubel Rudra was abducted from his laundry at around 10:30 am and Sameer at around 2:30 pm.

“Many people thought that Rubel and Sameer were abducted by the police. To find out about them, acquaintances asked Keshab Mitra to go to the police. Keshab was on his way to Bayezid Bostami Police Station in the afternoon when the kidnappers took him away in an auto-rickshaw from Hillview Road No. 1 at around 4:45 pm. At that time, people came forward due to his screams, but could not catch them. After the locals informed the detective police about the matter, they went on a raid.”

In response to questions from journalists at the press conference, Deputy Commissioner Raish Uddin said that as far as the police initially know, all the kidnappers who were arrested are followers of Burma Saiful.

Former Chhatra Dal leader Burma Saiful’s name has been mentioned in various crimes in the Bayezid area. Locals also say that people in the Bayezid area have formed a human chain against him recently.

Rais Uddin said that the police are trying to catch him. We don’t care about his political identity. The operation to catch the remaining kidnappers and Burma Saiful is ongoing.

“Saiful, the former joint general secretary of Chittagong Metropolitan Chhatra Dal, was arrested by Bayezid Police Station on June 17, 2021, after being shot. At that time, Chhatra Dal alleged that the police shot Burma Saiful ‘out of revenge’.
