Eight people, including former district Chhatra Dal president Zakir Khan, have been acquitted in the murder case of prominent businessman Sabbir Alam Khandaker of Narayanganj.
Judge Mominul Islam of the Narayanganj Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court gave the verdict on Tuesday (January 7). The verdict was announced at the time of the verdict.
Those acquitted are former district Chhatra Dal president Zakir Khan, Jiku Khan, Mamun Khan, Nazir Ahmed alias Nazir and 8 others.
Court Police Inspector Qayyum Khan confirmed the matter.
Abul Kalam Azad Zakir, the state prosecutor of the District and Sessions Judge’s Court, said that the court acquitted eight accused, including Zakir Khan, in the Sabbir murder case based on the testimony of 21 witnesses.
Lawyer for the accused, Rajib Mondal, said that a total of 33 cases were pending in the court against former Narayanganj District Chhatra Dal president Zakir Khan at different times. Out of these, Zakir Khan had already been acquitted in 30 cases. He is on bail in two of the remaining three cases. Today, after being acquitted in the murder case of Narayanganj business leader Sabbir, there is no more obstacle to his release. Hopefully, he will return to us in the next few days.
Former office secretary of Narayanganj district Chhatra Dal and Sadar Thana BNP joint convener Didar Khandaker said, “We are happy with this verdict. Our leader Zakir Khan has been harassed for 17 years with false and conspiratorial cases. Today, through this verdict, those conspirators have received a befitting reply. With this happiness, we have celebrated with sweets and organized prayers in various mosques.”
Meanwhile, Zakir Khan’s leaders and activists are holding a joyous procession and distributing sweets in the courthouse following the news of his acquittal in the murder case.
Incidentally, on February 18, 2003, business leader Sabbir Alam Khandaker was shot dead. After the murder, the then district BNP president and current Trinamool BNP secretary general and the deceased’s elder brother Taimur Alam Khandaker filed a case with Fatalla Police Station in the name of 17 people, with former MP Gias Uddin as the main accused. After filing the case, a total of 9 investigating officers were changed. Later, ASP Mosihuddin, the 10th investigating officer of the CID, after a long investigation of about 34 months, submitted a charge sheet to the court on January 8, 2006, naming 8 people as accused. In this, former MP Gias Uddin, his brother-in-law Jewel and Shaheen were acquitted from the case and a total of 8 people including former Chhatra Dal president Zakir Khan, his two brothers Jiku Khan and Mamun Khan were named as accused.
The main accused in the case, Gias Uddin, was excluded from the case in this chargesheet, so the plaintiff in the case, Taimur Alam Khandaker, filed a complaint petition in the court on January 24 of that year. In the complaint petition, Taimur Alam said, ‘Gias Uddin is the main protagonist of the Sabbir Alam murder. The investigation officer has filed a fabricated chargesheet by exonerating Gias Uddin and his associates from the charges.’
Since then, the case has been going on for more than 5 years in the Narayanganj Judicial Magistrate’s Court (Magistrate’s Court). In October 2011, Taimur Alam Khandaker withdrew the objection petition filed in the court. Due to the withdrawal of the objection petition, former MP Gias Uddin is no longer an accused in the case. As a result, the case is being conducted based on the charge sheet against the 8 people that the CID had filed in the court on January 8, 2006.
