Construction of carpeted roads and bridges in Morelganj halted, contractor missing
It has been learned from on-site inquiries that the contractor company named Mahbub Brothers Enterprise started the work of the project of constructing an 8-kilometer carpeted road from Pingariya to Teligati via Ethimullah Dhuli Gati towards Herma Bazar in Teligati Union of the upazila in November 2021. Later, the construction of the Ethimullah Katakhal adjacent bridge, the Hargati, Dhuli Gati Batar Khal adjacent bridge and the Teligati Bazar adjacent bridge under this work started in late 2022, but the work of the contractor company was partially completed by casting the base of the bridges and the work was abandoned midway, and no trace of the contractor company is found. As a result, the materials of the bridge under construction are on the verge of rusting in the rods due to the sun and rain.
UP member Md. Abul Kalam Azad and several other local residents including Rafiqul Islam, Lutfar Hawlader, Habib Talukder, Atiyar Dihider, Khan Badiuzzaman said that the construction work of the bridge has been stopped at 3 places on the road for almost a year. There is no certainty as to when the work will resume. The suffering of pedestrians, van drivers, passenger motorcycle riders is now at its peak. The locals are demanding the immediate restart of the stopped construction work and are seeking the intervention of senior officials of the concerned department to alleviate the suffering of the public.
In this regard, Teligati UP Chairman Morsheda Akhter said, “Last year, the construction of 3 ongoing bridges on the 8-kilometer carpeting road from Pingariya to Herma was carried out by workers of the contractor company for a few days. Later, they stopped the work. The matter has been informed to the Executive Engineer of the Bagerhat District Roads and Towns Department several times.”
In this regard, Mohammad Ashraful Islam, Executive Engineer of the Bagerhat District Roads and Township Department, said, “A written letter has already been sent to the contractor to start the ongoing 8-kilometer carpeting road work in Teligati Union of Morelganj as it is temporarily closed. No response has been received so far. If they do not start the work soon, a new tender for this work will be issued.
