Long-awaited kidney transplants resume at BSMMU Super Speciality Hospital

Today, Monday, December 23, 2024, the kidney transplant program was inaugurated by the Honorable Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam. Earlier, the last 31st kidney transplant was completed at the Super Specialized Hospital on July 28 this year. kidney transplant program was inaugurated by BSMMU’s Honorable Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, newly appointed Director (Additional Responsibilities) of the Super Specialized Hospital and Dean of the Faculty of Basic Science and Paraclinical Science Professor Dr. Saif Ullah Munshi, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Proctor Dr. Sheikh Farhad, Head of Transplant Program and Urologist Professor Dr. AKM Khurshidul Alam, Renal Transplant Program Coordinator Professor Dr. Touhid Md. Saiful Islam Dipu, Additional Director Dr. Md. Shahidul Hasan, Private Secretary to the Honorable Vice-Chancellor Dr. Md. Rahul Quddus Biplob, Assistant Professor Dr. Abu Hena Helal Uddin Ahmed and others were present.

The donor of today’s 32nd kidney transplant at the Super Specialized Hospital is Kohinoor Begum, 50, a resident of Noakhali district. The kidney recipient is Sahara Begum, 48, from Dhaka district. Kohinoor Begum is Sahara Begum’s aunt. The transplant operation, which started at 8 am, was successfully completed at 3 pm. The total cost of a kidney transplant at BSMMU Super Specialized Hospital is Tk 3 lakh. If you go to a neighboring country for this kidney transplant, the cost will be at least Tk 25 lakh.

At this time, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam said that there are advanced kidney transplant services available in the country, especially at BSMMU, at a low cost, and patients do not need to go abroad for kidney transplants by spending additional money.

The kidney donor surgical team included Professor Dr. Touhid Md. Saiful Islam Dipu, Assistant Professor Dr. Md. Wahiduzzaman, Assistant Professor Dr. Akhter Kamal Parvaz, Dr. Md. Sultan Uddin. The kidney recipient surgical team included Professor Dr. AKM Khurshidul Alam, Assistant Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam, Dr. Mahbubul Islam Khandaker, Dr. Sheikh Imran Mohammad, Dr. Mashrura Rahman Barsha. The perfusion team included Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid Al Mamun, Dr. Md. Ashrafur Rahman.
