Accused in Rupganj BUET student’s death case remanded for 2 days

A court has granted two-day remand to three accused in the death of BUET student Muhtasim Masud (22) after he was hit by a private car in Rupganj, Narayanganj.
Senior Chief Judicial Magistrate Noor Mohsin’s court granted their remand application on Sunday (December 22) morning. Earlier, a five-day remand application was filed against the accused.
The accused are Mubin Al Mamun (20), son of Brigadier General (retd) Abdullah Al Mamun, a resident of Mirpur DOHS area of the capital and a private car driver; Mirajul Karim (22), son of Rizwanul Karim of Pirerbag area of Mirpur; and Asif Chowdhury (19), son of Bahauddin Chowdhury of Sector 13, Uttara.
Confirming the matter, Narayanganj Court Police Inspector Qawum Khan said, “The court has granted two-day remand to the three accused in the murder of a meritorious student of BUET. Instructions have been given to complete their interrogation within the next three working days.”
He also said that the arrested accused did not have driving licenses. They only had learner licenses. There is no legal right to drive on the road with this license.
In this regard, plaintiff’s lawyer Sakhawat Hossain Khan said, “In the presence of the police, drunkards came and ran over the students with their car. One student died on the spot. The condition of the other two students is also not good. Later, these drunkards were arrested and when the dope test was conducted, the report of both of them came positive. In view of these circumstances, the court gave them a two-day remand. I hope that this case will be turned under section 302 and will be considered as murder. Moreover, we will definitely turn this case under section 302 through legal battle.”
Earlier, on Thursday, around 3 am, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Muhtasim Masud (22), who was riding a motorcycle, was killed after being hit by a private car in a 300-foot area in Purbachal Sub-city of Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj. He is the son of Masud Mia, a resident of Green Road area of Kalabagan Police Station in the capital. Mehedi Hasan Khan (22) and Amit Saha (22), students of the CSE department of the university, were seriously injured. Mehedi is undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital in the capital and Amit is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The deceased Muhtasim Masud (22) is a second-year student of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department of BUET.
The father of Muhtasim, who was killed in the incident, filed a case with Rupganj Police Station under the Road Transport Act.
According to the case report, at 8 pm on Thursday, Muhtasim came to the 300-foot Nila Market area on his motorcycle with two friends for a meal. They were returning home after finishing their meal. At around 3 am, the motorcycle was stopped at a police checkpoint at the Nila Market intersection and they were being questioned. At that time, a private car coming at a reckless speed hit the three people on the motorcycle standing at the checkpoint. Muhtasim Masud died on the spot. Two of his classmates were injured.
Later, the police members at the checkpoint arrested three people including the driver and brought them to Rupganj Police Station. Police said that an empty liquor bottle and a can of beer were found in the private car. Later, when the arrested accused were tested at Narayanganj General Hospital, the reports of two of them came positive. They are Mubin Al Mamun (20) and Mirajul Karim (22).
