In the 3 days surrounding Victory Day, flowers worth Tk 3 crore were sold in Gadkhali, Jessore, known as the flower capital. Farmers are happy that all types of flowers are getting higher prices this time. Wholesalers and retailers say that flower production has decreased due to unfavorable weather conditions. Therefore, the prices of all flowers were higher due to reduced supply compared to demand. Farmers hope that if the market is so strong, they will overcome the losses in the coming days.
About 20 kilometers west of Jessore town, along the Jessore-Benapole highway, is Gadkhali, known as the flower capital. Every day before sunrise, the place becomes bustling with the hustle and bustle of farmers, wholesalers, and laborers.
Farmers bring all the spring flowers, including roses, daisies, gerberas, chrysanthemums, and marigolds, from their fields to this market. The flowers are then sold to wholesalers in different parts of the country.
A flower seller said that the prices of flowers have been good this time. Gandha flowers were sold for 600-700 taka, Rajnigandha for 1200 taka and roses for 1000-1200 taka for etch 100 flowers.
Another flower seller said, “The most demanded flowers in today’s market are marigolds and gandha flowers. We are sending flowers from Godkhali market all over the country.”
Wholesalers and retailers say that flower production has decreased due to unfavorable weather conditions this year. The prices of all types of flowers were higher on Victory Day due to lower supply compared to demand. If the market is so strong, farmers hope to overcome their losses in the coming days.
A flower farmer said, “Flowers are being cultivated again because of two crop losses. This is causing delays in flowering. And the market is getting higher prices due to the low supply of flowers.”
Another flower farmer said, “If we get flowers at prices like this in the market, we will be able to overcome the previous losses.”
Those concerned say that flowers worth around Tk 3 crore were sold in three days on the occasion of Victory Day. Although the production of flowers was low due to late cultivation, the farmers benefited due to the high prices.
Bangladesh Flower Society President Abdur Rahim told Morning Glory that flower growers suffered a lot due to the rain this time. However, they are hopeful that they will be able to overcome the losses as the market prices are good.
It is worth noting that, according to the Department of Agriculture, 15 types of flowers are commercially cultivated on about 1,500 hectares of land in Jessore..
