It is known that this year (2024) ‘Community Policing Day’ was not celebrated due to the change of government. In the last year, 2023, there were 8 lakh 94 thousand 206 members in 49 thousand 529 community policing committees across the country including Dhaka. This time, the police are working to form a new committee called “Citizen Forum”.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz has announced the auspicious inauguration of the newly formed committee of ‘Citizens Forum’ with the aim of further strengthening the police system of Chittagong Metropolitan City. He announced this inauguration at a program organized at the multipurpose shed of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Lines in Dampara on 8 December  at 3:00 pm.

In his inaugural speech, he said, “Citizens Forum is the new form of community police. Rather, its scope is greater than the community policing system.
People from different classes and professions of society are important in controlling crime and bringing criminals under the law. The type of crime also varies by place and region. In addition, it is difficult to control crime because the number of police officers is low compared to the population of Bangladesh. As a result, it is easier to control crime and identify criminals by involving people from different classes and professions of society through the Citizen Forum.

The members of this forum will stand by those who have no place to stand in society.” He further said, “This is a non-political organization. This forum will have representation from all classes, professions, religions and castes of society, regardless of party or opinion.

” After the inauguration, everyone was introduced to the leaders of the 16 police station committees and metropolitan committees of the metropolis. In their speeches, the committee leaders wished for the success of this new initiative and highlighted their work methods. CMP Deputy Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Md. Raish Uddin will serve as the focal point of the formed committees.

Also present at the event were Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Md. Humayun Kabir; Deputy Police Commissioner (Headquarters) SM Mostain Hossain, BPM-Bar (Additional DIG); Convener of Citizens Forum Chittagong Metropolitan Committee Mohammad Mashiul Alam Swapan and Member Secretary Dr. Abu Naser, along with senior officials of CMP, leaders and members of Citizens Forum Chittagong Metropolitan and various police station committees, members of the anti-discrimination student movement, representatives of different classes, professions, religions and castes of the society regardless of party or opinion.

The committee was announced at the event with 86 members from Chittagong Metropolitan City, 45 from Kotwali Police Station, 50 from Sadarghat Police Station, 50 from Chawkbazar Police Station, 41 from Baklia Police Station, 53 from Khulshi Police Station, 51 from Bayezid Police Station, 42 from Panchlaish Police Station, 35 from Chandgaon Police Station, 36 from Pahartali Police Station, 45 from Akbarshah Police Station, 58 from Halishahar Police Station, 49 from Dodbalmooring Police Station, 37 from Bandar Police Station, 36 from EPZ Police Station, 29 from Patenga Police Station and 31 from Karnaphuli Police Station.

It is worth noting that before the event started, a person suddenly said, “When was this committee formed, who is there?” raising a question that created intense tension among the people present.

Later, during his speech, the CMP Commissioner said this is not a political seminar, this type of behavior is not acceptable, If any quarry must follow systematic procedure.

In response to a question CMP media responsible ADC Tarek Aziz said to daily morning glory — If you want to know who added this committee member I will provide the list.
