After a nine-month long war in 1971, Lalmonirhat district was liberated from the invaders on December 6, in exchange for the blood and sacrifice of millions of martyrs. The freedom-loving people of Lalmonirhat were rejoicing in victory. On this day in 1971, to liberate Lalmonirhat district from the enemy, the Pakistani occupying forces were forced to retreat in the face of the fierce struggle of the brave freedom fighters and the fierce resistance of the freedom-loving people. With the sunrise on December 6, the brave freedom fighters of Bengal hoisted the flag of victory. During the Liberation War, Lalmonirhat district was under Sector No. 6. The headquarters of that Sector No. 6 was in Burimari, Patgram Upazila of Lalom-Nirhat.

Being a divisional city of the Railway, Lalmonirhat area was inhabited by Biharis. At the beginning of the Liberation War, the barbaric Pak army carried out a massive massacre and looting and arson continued until November 1971. At 6 am on December 6, the Pak army, Razakars, Al Badr and their allies fled from Lalmonirhat Railway Station to Rangpur Cantonment in two special trains. While on their way, the Pak army crossed the Teesta River and bombed a girder of the Teesta Railway Bridge, causing extensive damage to the bridge. The district administration is organizing a discussion and memorial service on Friday afternoon.
