The traditional mud houses of rural Bengal are disappearing due to the touch of modernity. Brick and stone buildings are taking the place of mud houses. Peaceful earthen house surrounded by green shade. Not long ago, many mud houses were visible in every village. What the village people call the poor man’s AC house. These houses made of mud are suitable for living in extreme heat and extreme cold besides avoiding storms and rains. Now the mud house is not so noticeable. It was long ago when there were beautiful mud houses in the villages. If you want to see mud houses, you may go to villages. And many mud houses are still not found in villages. The poor families are now building small semi – finished houses by improving their condition through hard work and becoming self-reliant.
Once upon a time in Dupchanchia upazila there were mud houses in every village. Mud house is locally called Kothar house by many people. However, except for a few places, this house is no longer seen anywhere. With the touch of modernity and the evolution of time, this well-known mud house is on the way to extinction in different villages of the upazila. For the last few years no one is making new mud houses. Due to the easy availability of bricks and sand and the change in the socio-economic status of the poor people, these traditional Bengal mud houses are disappearing.
The craftsman of the mud house said that about 18 years ago I did not have time to make the mud house. After a house was built, the addition had to be used. But they don’t make them anymore. Everyone now builds brick, semi-frame or tin houses. It used to take months to build one mud house. But I used to do about 4-6 houses in a month.
In Md Majnu Khan’s house in Nagarpara, eight villages of Bogra Dupchanchia upazila, the old memory-filled mud house can be seen. Mo Majnu Khan said, this house belonged to my grandfather. My father lived after he died. The house is still there. I still left the mud house to keep the old memories of my grandfather. But now many people are building brick houses to keep pace with the times, so mud houses are gradually disappearing.
Nahid Hasan of Atgram Nagarpara of Bogra Dupchanchia Upazila said that once almost every house had a mud house. There was no difference between rich and poor. Nowadays, due to the increase in financial capacity and the desire to live a modern life, people are inclined to demolish mud houses and build concrete houses.
MA Baten Khan, a resident of mud house, said that mud house is comfortable to live in, but with the evolution of time, most of the people are demolishing mud houses and making concrete houses for more security. During the time of Bap Dada, the mud houses were endless, but in keeping with the times, large buildings made of bricks or concrete have taken over the place, as a result of which the mud houses have almost disappeared from the village today. Many of the present generation are unfamiliar with this mud house.
