International Disaster Mitigation Day celebrated in Kumarkhali

International Disaster Mitigation Day was celebrated at Kumarkhali in Kushtia with the theme ‘Empowering the next generation, building a disaster resilient future’. Various programs have been taken up to celebrate the day. Since 1989, every year on 13th October, ‘International Disaster Mitigation Day’ has been celebrated all over the world. This initiative is to increase the awareness of people and related parties to reduce the risk of disaster.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Kumarkhali, Md. Amirul Arafat presided over the ceremony at the entrance of the Upazila Parishad after the procession organized by the upazila administration and the implementation of the disaster management department, disaster management and ministry on Sunday morning.
Officials of the concerned departments, officials of various government departments, students, various social organizations, journalists of print and electronic media and others were present.
Training is being provided to government and non-government employees, public representatives, volunteers, teachers, media personalities and disaster management committee members at various levels to increase the capacity of the vulnerable population. In disaster management, the issues of inclusive risk reduction and response activities have been included in the relevant legal framework and guidelines for disaster risk reduction of all levels of people including physically and mentally challenged persons, women, senior citizens and children. The preparedness and disaster risk reduction programs are being strengthened through the implementation of rural infrastructure reform and maintenance, employment for the very poor and VGF programs to increase the capacity of the vulnerable population, reduce disaster risk and maintain their normal lifestyle.
1090 (toll free) interactive voice response (IVR) service has been launched on mobiles for early warning of disasters and daily weather reports. Programs are also being implemented to ensure mental health care for disaster victims.
