31 kg of polythene seized from Supershop Basket and Shwapno in Chittagong
Two supershop fined over Lakh Taka
In Chittagong city, a Basket Supershop has been fined 1 lakh 30 thousand for selling rotten vegetables, fruits and re-packaging and selling stale fish and meat with new date levels, storing stale food in the refrigerator in a dirty environment in the restaurant.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Arafat Siddiqui of Kattali Circle conducted this operation on Zakir Hossain Road under Khulshi police station of the city on Tuesday (October 1) afternoon. Officials of the Department of Environment were also present. Members of CMP Khulshi police station were present.
During the operation, the operation manager Md. Mizanur Rahman was arrested for storing and using 31 kg of banned polythene in Basket Super Shop.
The super shop was found to be fraudulently selling rotting vegetables, repackaged fruits and stale fish and meat with current day tags. Due to the apprehension of serious financial and health damage to the consumer, the offense was accepted on the basis of the confession of the accused.
As the allegations were found to be true and the accused’s crime was discovered, Md. Mizanur Rahman was fined Tk 10,000 under the Bangladesh Environment Protection Act, 1995 (amended 2010) and Tk 1 lakh under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009 respectively. At the same time, 31 kg polythene bags were seized and the responsible officer of the Department of Environment was instructed to dispose of them.
Later raids were conducted on Shwapno supershops. There, necessary instructions are given by checking the price and quality of daily necessities, fish, meat, fruits etc. However, its owner Nizam Uddin was fined Tk 20,000 under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009 for storing and selling stale food in the refrigerator in an unsanitary and dirty environment at the Imperial Cafe and Restaurant located inside Shwapno Super Shop.
