No decision has been taken regarding the release of water from Kaptai Lake, said ATM Abduzzaher, Manager of Kaptai Hydropower Station.
He gave this information to morning Glory on Thursday (August 22) around 3 pm. He told Morning Glory that Kaptai Lake has a water holding capacity of 109 Mins Sea Level (MSL); At present the water level in the lake is 104 MSL. At least 5 MSL of water is required to release the water.
It is unlikely that there will be so much water in the rains of the next two days. So there is no possibility of water release now.
And if there is no water, the public will be informed by notification in various government agencies and mass media. The official of Kaptai hydroelectric power station also requested not to listen to the rumors spread on social media that the water of Kaptai lake will be released at 3 pm.
Kaptai Lake has 16 sluice gates with a length of 12.2 meters and a width of 11.3 meters. Together they can discharge 5 lakh 25 thousand cusecs of water per second. When the lake is filled with more than 109 MSL, the water is released through the sluice. In 1962, the construction of dam on Kaptai Lake was completed. The water stored in the dam is used to generate electricity at Kaptai Hydroelectric Station. Between 1962 and 1988, generators with a total power generation capacity of 230 MW were installed here. It is the largest dam and the only hydroelectric power plant in Bangladesh.
