Prof Yunus to arrive today; Administrative changes are ongoing

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, who is set to become the chief adviser to the interim government are expected to arrive in Dhaka from Paris today. Describing violence as enemy, he said that the people must protect and make Bangladesh a wonderful country for them and for their future generations.
“Our youth is ready to give this leadership in creating a new world. Let us not miss the chance by going into any senseless violence. Violence is our enemy. Please don’t create more enemies. Be calm and get ready to build the country,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Muhammad Yunus, 84, will head an interim government following the toppling of the South Asian country’s prime minister and dissolution of parliament, according to the Bangladesh president’s press secretary.
Yunus is a social entrepreneur and banker who won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his pioneering microfinance work that helped alleviate poverty in Bangladesh and was widely adopted around the world.
He is also a longtime critic of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned recently and fled the country following years of increasingly authoritarian rule.
Yunus was born in 1940 in Chittagong, a port city in southeastern Bangladesh. He studied at Dhaka University, before receiving the prestigious Fulbright scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University in the United States, where he received a Ph.D. in economics. In 1972, a year after Bangladesh won independence from Pakistan, he returned to teach at Chittagong University.
Yunus and the Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, after lending a total of about $6 billion in housing, student and micro-enterprise loans, and specifically in support of Bangladeshi women.
He is also the founder of the Yunus Centre, a Dhaka-based think tank that helps develop new social businesses. He tell to the media that the Grameen Bank doesn’t aim to earn money – but to help the poor and empower small businesses.
Before taking the charge by Dr. Yunus, a lot of changes are going on in the administration.

M Mainul Islam has been appointed as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh Police. Earlier, he was commandant of traffic and driving school, Dhaka as the Additional IGP. Prior to this, the contact of IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun was cancelled and released him from his post. Newly Appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) asked all officers and forces of all specialized units, including Rajarbagh Police Lines, POM, APBNs, all metropolitan and district police lines to join duty by today evening.
Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) AKM Shahidur Rahman has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
AKM Shahidur Rahman replaced Barrister Md Harun-or-Rashid as the RAB chief. Harun got appointment as the RAB chief on May 29, has been transferred to police headquarters as the Additional IGP.
M Mainul Hasan, who was Deputy Inspector General of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a specialized intelligence and investigation wing of the Bangladesh Police, has been appointed as the new commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). He will replace DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman who was transferred to the Police Headquarters as Additional Police Inspector General,
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin has submitted a letter to the President, requesting exemption from his post citing personal reasons, office sources said. He was also the former president and secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, was appointed as the Attorney General of the state on October 8, 2020.
Additional attorney general Sheikh Mohammad Morshed has written a letter to the President, requesting exemption from his post. He said that citing personal reasons, he gave the exemption letter to the President through Attorney General AM Amin Uddin this morning. Supreme Court lawyer Sheikh Mohammad Morshed was appointed as Additional Attorney General by the President on January 24, 2021.
