8 people were shot dead in a clash between two sides in Rupganj of Narayanganj. The injured were rescued and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The incident took place in Naora village of Kayetpara union of the upazila several times from morning to noon on Monday (March 25). The clash took place between the supporters of former UP chairman Rafiqul Islam and former UP member Mosharraf Hossain.
The shot dead are Akbar (24), Tajel (36), Joynal (35), Shamim (25), Muktar Hossain (60), Nur Hossain (24), Arif (9) and Roman (20).
According to the police and local sources, former UP member Mosharraf Hossain had a conflict for a long time with Kayetpara Union former chairman Rafiqul Islam and his brother Zilla Parishad member Mizanur Rahman. There have been frequent clashes between different housing companies over land sales and dominance. As a result, a young man named Nazmul was beaten and injured by Musharraf’s followers on Sunday night. As a result of this incident, clashes between the two sides took place from Monday morning to noon. 8 of Mosharraf Hossain’s followers were shot dead. Besides, it has been claimed that at least 20 followers of former chairman Rafiqul Islam have been injured.
UP member Mosharraf Hossain’s cousin Alauddin Mia said, due to previous dispute, Rafiq’s people attacked and vandalized our houses. At this time, 8 people were shot by them. Besides, many others were injured.
Former chairman Rafiqul Islam and Zahid Hasan counter-complained. He said, Mosharraf Hossain’s relatives and followers announced to expel our people from the area. According to that announcement, they attacked the houses of our people. At least 20 of us were injured.
Rupganj police station officer-in-charge (OC) Deepak Chandra Saha confirmed the matter. He said, the police went and brought the situation under control. Now the situation is calm. Legal action will be taken if complaints are received.
