Workers Protest in NHT Fashion to Demand Pay Hike
Staff Reporter, Chattogram
The workers have besieged the head office of NHT Fashion, a subsidiary of Pacific Jeans Group of EPZ (CEPZ), demanding a salary increase. On Tuesday (January 09) this movement was held from 8:30 am to 9:30 am.
According to CEPZ sources, according to the new structure determined by the Bangladesh Export Processing Authority (BEPZA), the minimum salary for workers is now Tk 12,800. Accordingly, EPZ has already increased the salary of workers in Yangwan factory to Tk 4,500. However, the salary increase process is different in Pacific Jeans. Salary increments in this institution are grade wise. As a result, the salary of the old worker and the new worker becomes the same. There is dissatisfaction with that. Four days later, on the morning of the opening of the factory on Tuesday, the workers of an organization called NHT Fashion of the group gathered and started a movement.
When Pacific Jeans Group managing director Syed M Tanvir was contacted over the phone, he said that, in the face of the agitation, the situation calmed down a bit after the assurance of 4,000Tk increase in salary. Later, the company’s workers joined the work again.
Assistant Superintendent of police Industrial zone in Chittagong Salim Newaz said that they are solving the issue by sitting with both parties.
Abdus Sobahan, executive director of Chittagong EPZ, said that in the new salary structure, the minimum salary in other garment factories is 12 thousand 500 taka. It is 12 thousand 800 taka in the sale. According to that, the workers of that institution had given some demands.
