An attack to kill journalist Zakaria Hossain Joseph took place under the leadership of Moazzem Hossain Jewel, Chairman of Sarmangal Union of Sunamganj’s Dirai Upazila. Journalist Joseph and his younger brother Johan were seriously injured. Journalist Joseph is working as a correspondent for daily Bhorer paper.

The attack took place on Monday (September 4) at 7 o’clock in the evening in front of journalist Joseph’s municipal residence. The injured have been transferred to Sylhet for advanced treatment with first aid at Dirai Government Hospital, said Resident Medical Officer Md. Raihan Uddin.

It is known that there is a previous dispute between the family of journalist Joseph and Chairman Jewell regarding the land donor of Zarlia Government Primary School. An arbitration meeting was held in Sarmangal village on Monday afternoon to settle the long-standing dispute. At this time, the chairman’s brother’s nephews threatened to kill journalist Joseph. Later in the evening around 7 o’clock journalist Joseph and his brother were attacked in front of Arambagh residence led by the chairman.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dirai Police Station Kazi Moktadir said that one person involved in the incident has been arrested. He also said that the matter is being looked at seriously.
