48 percent people think that the country’s politics is going in the wrong direction

48 percent people of the country think that the country’s politics is going in the wrong direction. And 70 percent people think that the country’s economy is going in the wrong direction.

On the other hand, 39 percent people think that politics is going in the right direction. 25 percent people think that the country’s economy is moving in the right direction.

This information has emerged in a study by The Asia Foundation Bangladesh and BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), BRAC University. The results of this survey were recently published by the State of Bangladesh’s Political, Governance, Development Society.

The survey ran from November 2022 to January 2023. A total of 10,240 men and women from 64 districts participated in it. The same survey was conducted in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

This information was informed in a press release of Asia Foundation. It also said that whether Bangladesh is going in the right direction socially, politically and economically – the survey participants were asked to know.

According to the survey, compared to 2019, the positive perception of people in all three aspects of this survey is relatively low, which is an expression of negative evaluation of people about the situation of the country as a whole.

The country’s low-income group’s positivity about future economic conditions has declined more than the high-income group’s. 84 percent of people earning Rs 5,000 or less said in 2019 that they believe the country’s economy is on the right track. In 2022, this answer was received from 32 percent people. That is, 52 percent of people have moved away from the previous positive position.

In comparison, it can be seen that among those with a monthly income of 40,000-50,000 taka, the rate of change is 30 percent, that is, 58 percent of people had a positive opinion in 2019 and 27 percent had a positive opinion in 2022.

44 percent of the survey respondents said that according to them, one of the main problems in Bangladesh is the increase in commodity prices. A total of 84 percent of people said that this problem has greatly affected their lives and livelihood. Business recession, unemployment, corruption, political instability etc. problems have also come up in the survey.

On the other hand, about 54 percent of the respondents in the 2022 survey said that there is an environment in Bangladesh where one group plays a strong role in politics and governance. In 2019, 72 percent of people held the same opinion. It is noteworthy that in 2019, 11 percent of people thought that the influence of the ruling party was negative in politics. 34 percent of people think so in 2022.

Majority of people (72 percent) said Padma Bridge is the most important achievement of Bangladesh. Almost half of the people (47 percent) who participated in the survey gave the credit for the construction of the bridge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On the other hand, 28 percent people gave credit to Bangladesh government.

The survey also says that people’s sympathy towards Rohingya refugees is decreasing. The attitude of the public to welcome refugees among themselves has gradually decreased. 34 percent in 2018, 15 percent in 2019 and 13 percent in 2022 had a positive opinion about refugees.
