Spain beat England 1-0 in the Women’s World Cup final at Sydney Olympic Stadium in Australia today to win the crown of world champions. Olga Carmona, captain of the winning team, scored the winning goal in the 29th minute of the match. England won the boys’ World Cup in 1966 and Spain in 2010. This is the first time in the women’s World Cup that the women of Spain and England reached the final. The Spanish girls won the title in the final for the first time. If Spain’s Jennifer Hermso had not missed a penalty in the 69th minute, Spain had the possibility of winning by two goals in this match.

In their most recent encounter, England ignored Spain at the Women’s Euro Championship last year. But this year’s final saw a different Spain. George Vilda’s men played attacking football from the start of the match. Spain took the lead in the 29th minute in that line of attack. They beat last time’s runners-up Netherlands in the fight to reach the last four. The Swedish girls could not reach the final despite playing the semi-finals five times after defeating Spain in the last round. Alexia Putilis finally beat England to win the World Cup.
