Case against 8 people including Chhatra League leader demanding ransom
Rajshahi Representative/
A case has been registered against five people, including the leader of the branch Chhatra League, on the charges of ransom demand and fraud by picking up a student who had come to get admission in Rajshahi University (Rabi) for the money of the ‘proxy agreement’. The day after this incident of last Thursday, two separate cases were registered in the city’s Motihar police station. Two or three others have been named as accused. The police sent the student to jail through the court after admitting admission through fraud.
The accused are – Mushfiq Tahmid Tanmoy, organizing secretary of Rabi Branch Chhatra League, Raju Ahmed, Joint General Secretary of Sher-e-Bangla Chhatra League and student of Management Studies Department, Shakwan Siddique alias Prangan of Education and Research Institute, Mohibul Momin Sonnet, student of Public Administration Department and admission through fraud. Student Ahsan Habib.
The description of the depositions in the two cases is almost identical. It is mentioned that last Thursday, Ahsan Habib went to Sir Jagdish Chandra Academy building with his mother to get admission in Population Science and Human Resource Development department of the university. After the admission process, when he came out of that building, three or four unknown persons kidnapped him and locked him on the third floor of Sher-e-Bangla Hall. After that, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Tk 3 lakh from his father on the mobile phone.
Meanwhile, Ahsan Habib’s mother reported the matter to the university authorities after not finding her son for a long time. Later he was rescued with the help of proctorial body. At one stage of interrogation, Ahsan Habib admitted that he got admission in the university through proxy. For this, an agreement of Tk 4 lakh 80 thousand was made with the premises. He paid Tk 4 lakh 20 thousand before admission and promised to pay the remaining Tk 60 thousand after admission. But Habib was later kidnapped and threatened for not paying the money. Habib’s mother filed a case against Chhatra League leader Tanmoy and three others on the charges of kidnapping and demanding ransom and physical torture. His father Saiful Islam said, “Two people named Tanmoy and Praganan demanded 3 lakh taka from me. They threatened me and asked me to send this money within an hour. I did not agree to pay the money.
Meanwhile, in view of the allegations, Chhatra League leader Tanmoy held a press conference on Friday and claimed that he was the victim of a conspiracy. He does not know Ahsan Habib. He said, ‘I am seeking a position in the next committee of the University Chhatra League. For that, there is a conspiracy to stop me. Branch Chhatra League President Golam Kibria and General Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu are directly involved in the conspiracy. The university administration has also joined in this.
Accused Raju Ahmed said, “Sonet and Prangan are the main makers of this incident.” As there is some money left in the contract with them, when the student is brought to the room next to me, I throw him out of the hall. Later, Provost Sir called to call them. As I am the responsible leader of the hall, I call them and hand over the student to the administration through the provost sir. I am not involved in this incident.
On the other hand, Tanmoy’s complaint is completely false and fabricated by University Branch Chhatra League President Golam Kibria and General Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu. Kibria said, “Tanmoy himself is complaining about us to live.” He was not someone who would stop him.
Ruhul Amin, OC of Motihar police station, said that two cases have been registered in this incident under the Public Examination Act and on charges of kidnapping and physical torture.
Proctor of the university, Professor Asabul Haque, said that Tanmay’s connection with the fraud was found in the interrogation of the students coming for admission. There were a few others with him. We have filed a case against five people in Motihar police station.
Earlier, Tanmay was named as the ‘main master’ of the proxy case who was arrested for giving proxy in the admission examination of the academic year 2020-21. After that incident, the Chhatra League expelled him from the organization. However, the ban was later withdrawn.
