A group of leaders and workers of the branch Chhatra League has been accused of leaving the hall of Shahjalal Science and Technology University in the middle of the night with threats of physical, mental torture and death, based on posting on Facebook.

Principal Abu Saeed Arfin Khan said that the incident took place at Syed Mujtaba Ali Hall of the university at 12 o’clock on Wednesday.

In this incident, the victim student Saikat Roy filed a written complaint against the former general secretary of the English Department of the University Chhatra League Azizul Islam Simedan and some of his supporters to the hall principal on Wednesday afternoon. Mehdi Hasan is another victim of the same incident. Both of them are students of the University’s Petroleum and Mining Engineering (PME) department in the academic year 2019-20.

Both are residential students of Syed Mujtaba Ali Hall, room number 420 of the university. The victims are known in the campus as border followers of Chhatra League leader.

However, other supporters of the border have counter-charged with ‘raging the juniors’ against the victims in the same incident.

Both complaints were received in writing by Principal Abu Saeed Arfin Khan; He said that a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the entire incident.

The complaint of the victim Mehdi Hasan

Mehdi said that a discussion meeting organized by the university authorities was held after the Chhatra League program on August 15. Many Chhatra League brothers gave speeches there. University administration officials and teachers also spoke. There, a sir said in a speech, ‘We don’t need to go to America. The West is our enemy. We can stay in the country.

“I saw that statement, “The sir who gave such a statement, his son is in Washington, America. Later, I post about it in a funny way and without mentioning anyone on Facebook, just for fun. After 20/25 minutes of posting, my group’s senior border brother noticed and told me about it, then I deleted the post.”

Later last Wednesday night around 11:40 my classmates and juniors came to the group and said, ‘Senior brothers are telling you to leave the hall with everything. The administration is also asking you to push the car down from the hall. I said, “The administration will give you a notice.”

Then they said, ‘Why do you have to give notice again, who are you? Even your father will not be able to do anything here.’ Later Shimanda Bhai said, ‘I got a call from the administration saying, ‘Let me take you out of the hall now’. When I said that I will go in the morning, Shimand, Rifat, Rahat, Tamim, Shimul, Asif, Rakibul, Bandhan, Habibur Rahman Asif, Nizam, Hussain Sarkar and Mubin Siddique started punching my collar. “At one point I fell on the floor and everyone started kicking me like a football. Later he took me out of the room by the collar and brought me to the street outside the hall. Beating there too. Saying, ‘If you take one step inside from here, you will cease to exist. I won’t even get your body.
“Then they took them to the guest room of the hall at night. After speaking with Mahmudul Sir (Assistant Principal) on the phone, I went to the room of one of my batchmates and did not have shelter. Then in the morning, when the assistant principal sir actually explained the issues to the sir, he said, there is no need to file a written complaint. I will look into the matter. So I did not file a written complaint.

The victim Saikat Roy said that he is a legitimate student of room number 420 of Syed Mujtaba Ali Hall. He, Mehdi and two others live in the same room.

In a written complaint to the Provost, Saikat mentioned that last night (Wednesday) at approximately 12:00 pm, 12-15 followers of Azizul Islam Frontier came to his room and got into an argument with one of the room (Mehdi) and beat him up.

At one point, when the attackers wanted to lock the door from inside, when I stopped them, some of them also beat him. Later to report the matter to the Provost Sir on his mobile phone, he met the border as soon as he came from the fourth floor to the third floor. Then border brother found me and asked “Where are you going?” Who are you calling?” When I told the Provost sir that I was calling, Shimant Bhai took the phone by force and dragged me to room 420 and beat me up, trying to block the room.
At that time there were Bandhan, Omar Farooq, Rifat, Nizam, Asif, Rakib, Shimul, Tarek of Public Administration Department, Anu of Anthropology Department, Tamim of Political Studies Department and Asifur Asif of Marine Science Department.
Saikat complained, “Many abused him in indecent language during the beating. Apart from this, Saikat said Omar Farooq took money from my drawer while taking out bedding and books from the room.
He also mentioned that he flashed my phone back at around 2:30 in the night and destroyed all the data and documents. At this time, border threatened and said, ‘you are lucky that Marini knows you. And if all this comes to the ears of the administration, then I will kill you. I could file a complaint earlier. Now the administration is on our side. Let’s see who lets you stay in the hall.
Saikat Roy said that he is now going to the village house.

Meanwhile, other supporters of the border have counter-charged with ‘ragging’ against the victims of the same incident. They are Rifat, Munir, second year student of Political Studies Department, Rahat, Nizam, same year student of English Department and Mubin Siddiqui of Social Work. In the written complaint given to the principal, they mentioned that Mehdi and Saikat physically and mentally abused them by calling them to room number 420. When the seniors of the group came to know about it, they sat down with everyone and locked the room number 420.

About the complaints of two students, Chhatra League leader Simeon said, after hearing that there was a misunderstanding between senior and junior in the hall at night, I attended the spot and settled the matter and informed the hall administration about the matter. The administration said, “They will talk to everyone and settle the matter.”

Principal Abu Saeed Arfin Khan informed that he has received two complaints and said that an investigation committee has been formed with him as the head to look into the incident. The other two members are Assistant Provost Abdullah Al Islam and Syed Mujtaba Ali Hall Assistant Provost Washek Miah. The committee will start the investigation very soon, said the principal.
