The court has sentenced five people, including Amar Desh Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman and Shafiq Rehman, to seven years in prison on charges of attempting to kill Prime Minister’s ICT Advisor Sajib Wazed Joy.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor announced the verdict on Thursday (August 17).

Other accused in the case are Nationalist Socio-Cultural Agency (Jasas) vice-president Mohammad Ullah Mamun, his son Rizvi Ahmed alias Caesar and US-based businessman Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan.

According to court sources, charges have been brought against Shafiq Rehman and Mahmudur Rahman as the masterminds of the conspiracy to abduct Prime Minister’s Information and Technology Advisor Sajib Wazed Joy. And the police have charged the accused Mohammad Ullah with being a consultant. Mohammad Ullah’s son Rizvi Ahmed has been accused of collecting Sajeeb Wazed’s personal information from the US investigative agency FBI. Later provided that information to other accused. Charges of financing and mentoring have been brought against Mizanur Rahman.

Earlier on August 3, 2015, DB inspector Fazlur Rahman filed a case in Paltan police station accusing Sajib Wazed Joy of kidnapping and conspiracy. The accused were charged under Sections 307 and 120-B of the Penal Code in the case.

It is stated in the statement that from any time before September 2011 till now BNP’s cultural organization (Jasas) leader Mohammad Ullah along with high-level leaders of BNP and BNP-led coalition parties participated in meetings with the accused at Jasa office in Paltan in Dhaka city and in New York city of the United States and different areas of the United Kingdom. . They conspired to kidnap and kill Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the United States. Accused Rizvi Ahmed was assigned the responsibility of committing the crime.

Then on April 16, 2016, journalist Shafiq Rehman was arrested in this case. He later absconded after getting bail. Apart from this, Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Amar Desh Patrika, also escaped after getting bail. And the remaining three accused are absconding since the beginning. After investigating the case, the charge sheet was filed in the court on February 19, 2018.

It may be noted that the plan to kidnap and kill Joy was in New York. The trial of this case has been completed there. BNP leader’s son Rizvi Ahmed Caesar was sentenced to 42 months imprisonment in the verdict of the case.
