Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque has commented that no one from the media will be harassed under the Cyber Security Act.
He said freedom of the press will be restored through the new Cyber Security Act. The new law will not contain the misuses of the Digital Security Act. As a result, no one in the media will be harassed by the Cyber Security Act.
The Law Minister said this at a press conference on the repeal of Digital Security Act-2018 and Cyber Security Act-2023 at Agargaon ICT Tower on Thursday afternoon.
Anisul Haque said that in the proposed cyber security law, the provision of fines starting from one paise to a maximum of Tk 25 lakh has been made. That does not mean that the penalty will always be Tk 25 lakh; This is not the case.
The minister said that it is stated in the law that the learned court will impose fine based on the type of crime. It is not the case that there will always be a fine of 25 lakh rupees. Bailable in all sections of the Cyber Security Act. However, most were non-bailable under the Digital Security Act.
The minister said that some people are calling the Digital Security Act and Cyber Security Act old wine in a new bottle, which is not correct. For example, Article 29 was jail for defamation, it is no longer there, Article 21 was jail for 10 years, now it has been reduced to 7 years, so it is not new.
Anisul Haque said, if someone says old wine in a new bottle, it is only for the purpose of criticism. For example, should I catch the person who stole the money from Bangladesh Bank? We need laws. Cyber Security Act-2023 to protect and secure the cyber world.
