Sheikh Hasina’s government is committed to free and violence-free elections: Law Minister

Law Minister Anisul Haque said that Sheikh Hasina’s government is committed to the people to conduct free, fair and violence-free elections in the country. He told the British High Commissioner Sarah Cook who came to pay a courtesy visit to his office at the Secretariat on Thursday afternoon.

After the meeting, the law minister told reporters, “This is the first meeting with me after Sarah Cook joined as British ambassador to Bangladesh. I knew him when he was head of DFID here. This is his routine meeting. After taking charge as High Commissioner, he has been meeting with almost everyone, he has met me in this continuation.

The Law Minister said, “We have talked about the development of Bangladesh with its previous area (DFID). He himself is very happy to return to Bangladesh. He said it himself. He said, he will focus on the development of Bangladesh.

The law minister also said, “Many things in the legal infrastructure of Bangladesh are dependent on the British law.” Now there have been many developments in the field of law and we have discussed how it can be further improved. We have discussed the training of our judicial officers and lawyers in the UK.

Foreign Minister and Information Minister said that the government is trying to bring back Tariq Rahman who is in London. In response to the questions of the journalists in this regard, the Law Minister said, ‘I will talk to them about this, then I will come back to you.’

When asked whether there was any discussion about the upcoming national elections in the meeting with the British High Commissioner, the Law Minister said, “There was no discussion about the elections.” He just said, I came to Bangladesh at a very interesting time. I told him that Sheikh Hasina’s government is committed to the people to conduct free, fair and violence-free elections in the country.

British High Commission’s Governance Adviser Rafiquzzaman, British High Commission’s Second Secretary (Political) Vanessa Beaumont were present during the meeting.
