Awami League candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has been elected as the new mayor of Sylhet City Corporation (CCIC). He got one lakh 19 thousand 991 votes in the boat symbol. His closest rival from the Jatiya Party is Plow symbol. Nazrul Islam Babul got 50 thousand 862 votes. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury was elected mayor privately by defeating Nazrul Islam Babul with 69 thousand 129 votes. Through this he was elected for the first time in Sylhet.
Returning officer Faisal Quader announced the result privately in the auditorium of Jalabad gas building in the city on Wednesday night.
Independent candidate in the election. 29 thousand 688 in Shahjahan Mia bus symbol, Zaker party. Zahirul Alam got 3 thousand 405 votes in rose flower symbol, independent candidate Mohammad Abdul Hanif Kutu got 4 thousand 296 votes in horse symbol, Md. Chalah Uddin Rimon got 2 thousand 648 votes in cricket bat symbol and Mushtaq Ahmed Rauf Mustafa got 2 thousand 959 votes in deer symbol.
On this day, 8 am to 4 pm voting was held in Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
There were a total of eight contestants in the Sylhet mayoral election. Meanwhile, the Islamist movement announced a boycott, although the candidate’s name remained on the ballot. On the other hand, 359 candidates contested for the councilor post. Out of them 272 contested in general ward and 87 contested in reserved women’s ward.
The total number of voters in Sylhet city is 4 lakh 87 thousand 753 people. Among them 2 lakh 54 thousand 363 male, 2 lakh 33 thousand 384 female and 6 third gender voters.
