There is a threat of flood in Sylhet. It has been raining continuously for the last three days in Sylhet. The weather department has informed that this rain will continue for another 15 days.

Besides, heavy rains are occurring upstream of Sylhet in the Indian state of Meghalaya. Due to heavy rains and floods coming down from the upstream, the water level of all the rivers in the north-eastern part of the country is increasing rapidly.

For this reason, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) has predicted that flash floods may occur in some low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts in the next two to three days. The district administration said preparations are being made to deal with possible floods.

Sylhet Water Development Board Executive Engineer Ashif Ahmed said, “The river water is close to the danger level. A slight increase will overcome it. At the same time, water is entering the upper and lower areas.” Sylhet recorded 135 mm of rainfall on Friday and 221 mm in the previous 24 hours. Heavy rains are causing flooding in the city. It has been raining intermittently since Saturday morning.

Sylhet assistant meteorologist Shah Md. Sajib Hossain said, “There is a risk of heavy rain in Sylhet for the next 48 hours. That’s why everyone needs to be careful. Landslides may occur especially in the border areas.”

The district administration of Sylhet held an emergency meeting on Thursday to prepare for the flood. Deputy Commissioner ordered to prepare relief and shelter. Mujibur Rahman.

Earlier, last year there was a severe flood in Sylhet. 70 percent of the area of Sylhet was submerged. Almost all the people of the district are affected. About 10,000 houses were destroyed in the flood. The people of Sylhet have not yet overcome the shock of last year’s floods.
