The husband and his family have been accused of beating up a housewife named Maryam Begum (22) with an iron for not getting dowry money in Gaibandha. The injured housewife is currently undergoing treatment in the surgery department of Gaibandha Sadar Hospital.

On the afternoon of Thursday (June 8), it was seen that the housewife was receiving treatment lying on bed number 30 of the surgery ward at Gaibandha Sadar Hospital. In this incident, last Tuesday night, the victim’s family filed a statement at Gaibandha Sadar Police Station. Earlier on the afternoon of June 4, this incident took place in Taluk Rifaitpur village of Badiakhali Union of Sadar Upazila.

The accused are Maryam’s husband Rashed Sarkar (30), father-in-law Farooq Sarkar (55) and mother-in-law Rasheda Begum (50).

It is said in the statement that Rashed-Mariam got married two and a half years ago. At the time of marriage, Mariam’s family gave about 3 lakh necessary furniture along with 2 lakh 20 thousand taka as gifts. Later a son was born in their house. Later, the husband Rashed demanded a dowry of Tk 5 lakh due to the family’s mischief. As she could not pay, Rashed physically and mentally abused Maryam at various times. At one stage, last 2 months ago, when Maryam refused to bring the dowry money again, they beat her and sent her to her father’s house with the child in her lap in a cloth. Since then the wife Maryam was staying in her father’s house.

In this situation, on June 4 at around 10 am Rashed suddenly asked Miriam to come home on his mobile phone, he came home with the baby and started doing family work as before. But on the same day at around 4 pm, Rashed asked his father and mother to bring Tk 5 lakh of the previously demanded dowry from Maryam’s father’s house. Rashed started beating him when he refused. At one point, they cut Maryam’s back, hands and feet with an iron. At that time Maryam was seriously injured and fell unconscious. Later, when the locals informed the family of Maryam’s father, they went and admitted the seriously injured Maryam to Gaibandha General Hospital.
Maryam Begum, who is undergoing treatment, said, “My husband was mentally and physically torturing me for a long time demanding dowry.” At various times he threatened to marry me elsewhere and divorce me. I was complying with everything due to the pressure of thinking about the world. But I could have died that day. Burnt areas are very painful.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Gaibandha General Hospital Tanvir Rahman Kallol said that the housewife is now out of danger and is undergoing treatment.

Wahedul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC-Investigation) of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station said, I have received a written complaint in this incident. The matter is being investigated.
