Jotsna Islam, daughter of Moulvibazar, has been elected mayor of London Borough of Redbridge. He was given the responsibility at the annual virtual meeting of the Red Bridge Council held on May 19.
Leaders of the Bengali community consider Jotsna Islam’s success in British mainstream politics as a major success for Bangladeshi women. Earlier on 29 April 2021, he was elected Deputy Mayor of the London Borough of Redbridge. She is the daughter of Abdur Rahman Mannaf Mia of Moulvibazar Sadar Union Ekatuna. Jotsna Islam’s husband Sam Islam has been serving as a councilor of the same council. They have one son and one daughter in their married life. They live in Red Bridge, London. Deputy Mayor Jotsna Rahman Islam was born in 1966 in London. But later he returned to the country with the wishes of his parents. He studied at Ali Amjad Government High School and Moulvibazar Government College in Moulvibazar. He went to London again in 1986. Besides working in the local government there, he did his MBA. Jotsna Islam is currently serving as the Vice Chairman of Redbridge Labor Party.
Jotsna’s younger sister Helen Islam, a cultural organizer, said, “Our parents wanted us to grow up adapting to the education, literature, culture and social environment of Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.” So he brought us to the country. I feel proud of my elder sister, she has brightened the face of the Bangladeshi community by being elected as the Mayor of the London Borough of Redbridge. The leaders of the Bengali community believe that this success has come from working tirelessly with dedication and honesty since becoming a councilor of Redbridge.
