Thursday was the day of nomination selection of candidates submitted on the occasion of Sylhet City Corporation election. At the end of the selection, 11 of the 376 councilor candidates were declared invalid by the concerned officials of the Regional Election Office.

Sylhet Regional Election Office Media Cell (City Election) Officer Syed Kamal Hossain said that nominations of 6 out of 287 candidates for the post of General Ward (Male Councilor) have been cancelled. And in the reserved ward (women councillors), out of 89 nominations of 5 have been cancelled.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, the nomination of five mayoral candidates out of 11 submitted for the post of mayor of Sisik was declared cancelled. All 5 candidates who were canceled are independent candidates. They are Samchun Noor Talukdar (Independent), Mohammad Abdul Mannan Khan (Independent), Maulana Zahid Uddin (Independent), Md. Shahjahan Mia (Independent) and Mushtaq Ahmed Rauf Mustafa (Independent).

And Awami League nominated candidate. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Japa’s Nazrul Islam Babul, Islamic Movement’s Hafiz Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, Zaker Party’s Md. Zahirul Alam and independent candidate Mohammad Abdul Hanif Kutu and Md. The nomination of Shalah Uddin Rimon was declared valid.

Candidates whose nomination papers have been canceled can appeal within the next three days.
