Couple sentenced to death for killing mother and son in Sylhet

The court sentenced a couple to death in the mother-son murder case discussed in Sylhet. At the same time each of them has been fined one lakh rupees. Sylhet Additional Metropolitan Second Court Judge Md. Noor Alam Bhuiyan gave this order.
The verdict was confirmed by the court’s PP Mohammad Zubair Bakhat. Accused Yusuf Khan Mamun is the son of Sajan Mia of Rampasha of Viswanath Upazila in Sylhet and his wife Tanya Akhter is the daughter of Bilal Hossain of Ghoshkandi village in Comilla.
According to local and court sources, Rokeya Begum (45), wife of Helal Mia of Jagannathpur Kalkali village of Sunamganj lived with her children in Kharpara area of Mirabazar area of Sylhet city. She was involved in beauty parlor business. Mamun used to bring his wife Tanya to Rokeya’s house due to their kinship. Rokeya offers Tanya a job in a beauty parlor. But Mamun and his wife were angry with Rokeya’s various activities. On the night of March 30, 2018, Mamun and Tania escaped by slitting the throat of Rokeya and her son SSC candidate Rabiul Islam (16). The next day, the police recovered the bodies of the mother and son from the house. Rokey’s five-year-old daughter Raisa was rescued from the side of the body with injuries. The killers left Raisa dead.
In this incident, Rocare’s brother Zakir Hossain filed a murder case at Kotwali police station. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the agency investigating the case, arrested Mamun and Tania within 10 days. They gave a statement under section 164 in the court. The court also recorded the statement of Raisa, the only eyewitness. After the investigation, a charge sheet was filed against the accused in the court on May 19, 2019. The trial of this case started on January 9, 2020. After taking the testimony of 19 out of 23 witnesses, the court announced the verdict today. The accused were present in the court when the verdict was announced.
